90,000 charging points open to the public in France according to the recharging barometer of AVERE France and the Ministry of Ecology based on Gireve data.

90,000 public charging points in France – February 2023

On February 28th, 2023, France had 90,803 publicly accessible charging points, representing an increase of 63% compared to the same month in 2022. On average, this means there are 135 charging points per 100,000 inhabitants.

Since January 1st, 1,524 new charging stations have been installed in the territory. These installations have made available to the public 8,698 new charging points.

There was an intense deployment of charging points in February 2023, with over 5,500 publicly accessible charging points installed this month. This is an absolute record, compared to the approximately 2,000 monthly installations in 2022! […] The latest milestone before the target of 100,000 public charging points, which is expected to be achieved by the end of the first semester. However, let’s not forget what matters most: installing the right charging station, with appropriate power, at the right place.

Every month, the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the AVERE-France publish a charging barometer. The barometer is based on data from Gireve, the e-mobility expert. This barometer provides benchmark information on the number of publicly accessible charging points in France, their geographical distribution, their power. Regional indicators are also available. The barometer also displays the usage of charging points, their availability rate and session volumes.

According to this barometer, only 10% of the available charging points in France offer fast charging. In addition, only 4% are equipped with ultra-fast charging (>150 kW, allowing for a charge in 20-30 minutes). However, following the obligation to equip all highway stations with charging points, a spectacular increase of 230% was observed in 2022. Although the total number of charging stations may seem low, it is actually sufficient to enable any itinerary on major routes. Furthermore, no queues were observed at the charging stations during peak travel periods.
