Developing large-scale EV flexibility services to support a low-carbon energy mix

As the proportion of EVs on European streets increases, the flexibility reserve represented by the sum of their batteries when parked increases, becoming very relevant for the functioning of the electricity systems.

Such a reserve of flexibility could then for instance be mobilised in the future both to support national or even local peaks in consumption during winter periods and thus avoid the use of highly emissive peak production plants; but also, to increase the proportion of low-carbon energy consumed in our energy mix and avoid losing renewable energy produced during periods of low consumption.

By aggregating data from a large number of European charging point operators (roads, public parking, shopping centres, tertiary buildings, fleets, etc.) and facilitating interactions between them and the various players in the electrical system, GIREVE supports the large-scale development of such virtuous use cases.

GIREVE is conducting R&D work with various actors in the electricity sector, such as flexibility aggregators, TSOs, and DSOs in order to study the relevance and test the role of interoperability platforms to unlock the potential of EV charging flexibilities.

GIREVE carries out various R&D projects, some of which are carried out with DREEV and others within the aVEnir project, a 13-member consortium, managed by ENEDIS (French DSO), partly founded by the French public fund ADEME and whose objectives are to experiment in real conditions, different types of management of electric vehicle charging point, supporting smart charge and V2G uses cases, and evaluate the opportunities provided by electric vehicle for the management of local flexibilities on the electricity network.
