2021 has been a turning point in the world of electromobility. National and European investment plans are pushing the ecological transition with a focus on the automotive industry. Major obstacles have now been removed, paving the way for a massive adoption.
Throughout the year, GIREVE has seen its activity grow exponentially. The number of charging sessions on the platform has doubled, and we have set up new services to meet the growing demand for analysis and forecasts from all market players.
At the heart of the ecosystem and benefitting from an 8-year experience of the market, GIREVE asked its team of experts to unveil 5 trends to follow in the electromobility sector in 2022:
National and European initiatives to foster EV infrastructure deployment are on the rise. The EU has already committed to having more than 1 million new public charging points by 2030 and to revising the infrastructure deployment directive. Each European country has also implemented incentives for EV adoption with a focus on EVSE installation. The uptake of EVSE network will thus accelerate in all EU countries in 2022.
Maas (mobility-as-a-service) refers to digital systems that offer users mobility as a service. It often refers to a mobile app providing users with information, booking and ticket payment for a wide variety of means of transportation. For example, a customer can use a single mobile application to book, buy and validate his or her train ticket, and use the same app to charge his or her electric car to a charging station.
This trend has emerged several years ago and will keep growing in 2022.

With Plug and Charge, as implied by the name, a user can charge an EV by simply plugging it into the charging station. No need for a mobile application or RFID card, the charging station and the vehicle communicate directly and pass on all the necessary information to the interested parties, ensuring maximum security in terms of data protection.
The year 2021 marked a turning point for Plug and Charge and this technology will be a strong trend in the EV charging industry next year
Smart charging refers to the modulation of power during EV charging sessions. The power can be modulated upwards or downwards, to satisfy constraints or opportunities coming from the electrical systems. In addition to power modulation, EVs connected to charging stations could even be asked to re-inject part of the energy stored in their batteries into the electrical grid (Vehicle-to-Grid).
Smart charging is subject to numerous R&D research projects and will be one of the trends to follow in 2022 and the years to come.
With the strong growth of the electromobility market in 2021, the amount of data collected is growing exponentially and it is now possible to detect, analyse and predict market trends. A good use of data will undoubtedly be a key factor of success for the actors of electric mobility in the years to come.
